The Coromandel Express train collided in the Balasore district of Odisha state, causing heavy loss of life. More than 1,000 people were seriously injured. There is a lot of discussion about what happened behind this incident. Meanwhile, taking into consideration the incidents of train accidents in the past, the Central Railway Department has developed the latest technology. Its name Kavach means shield. An anti-collision system was developed to achieve the goal of zero accidents. Meanwhile, the cost of this operation per kilometer is Rs. Estimated to be 50 lakhs.
The accident occurred around 7 pm on Friday when the Coromandel Shalimar Express derailed before colliding with a goods train. Another train ran over the derailed coaches of Yashwantpur Howrah Super Fast. Indian Railways has introduced an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system called KAVACH to prevent such accidents between trains. It was brought to increase the safety and efficiency of running trains. Kavach is not available here. It is done by Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO). Technology Security Integrity Level 4 certification is also available.
Kavach uses high-frequency radio communication. The system automatically activates the train brakes if the driver fails to control the train. All trains stop within 5 km. The Center has planned to bring 2,000 km of rail network under Kavach in 2022-23. It has also been successfully tested. This accident would not have happened if there was Kavach as a whole.
